Hi,

i want to build a plex server and i need help choosing a CPU i think i will go for a skylake and i would like one that does not need much power and does not generate a lot of heat.
I will stream a maximum of 2x 1080p

This is what i had in mind:

Case: Fractal Node 304
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z170N-WIFI
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX schwarz DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-3200
PSU:  Seasonic Platinum Series Fanless 400W ATX 2.3
CPU: ?
Storage: 6x HDD 8TB + 1xSSD

I do not know how much speed i really need in the worst case so the decision is pretty hard but i think i do not want to splash out more then 200 for a cpu - the lower the better of course but it should still be quality and should work fine for around 2-3 years at minimum.

the main clients will be a Samsung f6500TV and a PS4
Hopefully u can help me

Hi,

A good I5 skylake CPU will do really well.

Maybe a i5 6500?

even an i3 would do well, although for a plex server you could even use a spare toaster.

Intel i5-6600K@4.2GHz, 16GB Crucial DDR4-2133, Gigabyte Z170X-UD3, Be quiet shadow rock slim, Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ OC, Fractal design Integra M 550W, NZXT S340, Sandisk X110 128GB, WD black 750GB, Seagate momentus 160GB, HGST 160GB

Hi,

Get a haswell i3

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

yeah if i just run it you are right but if i have to do some transcoding it is a different matter altogether. recommended on the plex site is around 2000 passmark score but if i have subtitles + dts ma i need a lot more speed and the cpu should be able to do it for 2 streams. so no chance for the toaster :D

Pretty much anything will do at this point. i3 - i5 would be perfect for 1080p, 1440p and possibly 4k (you'll want to double check that).

Also... Platinum PSU, 6x 8TB drives... and your CPU budget is $200? Mmmmmkay.

i choose the psu because its passiv cooled an full modular and relativ small in size. i do not have an option regarding the hdds i need the space.

Just found it interesting that you're spending some big bucks on the HDDs, SSD, and PSU, but had such a small budget for the CPU given what you're trying to achieve - more so if you're trying to do encoding on the fly. I'd recommend an i5-6500 then. The Skylake CPU will give you a much lower power consumption at idle which will be great for 24/7 operation, and it will be competent enough to do your subtitles + DTS.

If you need more horsepower from your CPU, which sounds like you might... A low end i7 Halswell chip on the 1150 H97 chipset would be perfect.

do you maybe know another psu which is fully modular and passiv cooled, i would not mind to spent less and maybe invest more on other parts?

the case is pretty small so i am kind of afraid to run in temperature problems and this thing will stand right next to the tv in the living room so i want it to be as silent as possible, of course i know that with 6 hdds i can never be noisless.

List below? I was looking at H97 Chipset options with a Broadwell i7-5770C (has Iris Pro graphics capabilities), but couldn't make it work with the amount on SATA connectors you needed without an additional PCI card :(

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($199.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H170N-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($117.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive  ($75.88 @ Amazon)
Case: Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Tower Case  ($62.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $2053.22
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Not sure if it helps, but my NAS & media streamer is a QNAP TS-453 Pro which has a Celeron J1900 CPU and that feeds 4-6 users a mix of 720p and 1080p content with no issues over aggregated 4x1Gbps LAN

honestly i'd look for used sandy bridge and ivy bridge i5s and i7s, as well as motherboards, they are going to offer 80% of the performance needed, for about 40% of price, or like what linus done for his budget 8 core build, old xeon stuff.

also if it helps at all i use my main PC as a plex server, and even transcoding, it barely goes over 20% usage, and even less if it just needs to transcode audio for my chromecast.

Intel i5-6600K@4.2GHz, 16GB Crucial DDR4-2133, Gigabyte Z170X-UD3, Be quiet shadow rock slim, Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ OC, Fractal design Integra M 550W, NZXT S340, Sandisk X110 128GB, WD black 750GB, Seagate momentus 160GB, HGST 160GB

Real NAS' have ECC, starts at around $300 for a haswell i3 + board + 8gbs of ECC

i3's don't support ECC, and for a plex server it's not needed.

Yeah, an i3-6100 would do the trick, you could probably reduce the RAM to 8GB too.

I think this could be my system, what do you think? Any parts i should change?
