A lot of PC users use their rigs for gaming and I do too, but I also want to render in 3d using a great free 3d package called Blender 3d. Could LTT please consider doing a video on 3d rendering packages and what hardware is most important for each? Blender, for example, has a render mode called 'cycles' that uses CUDA cores. Blender is also written for multithreading so what type of CPU is best for it given no t all multicore CPUs are the same.

I use autodesk maya which is industry standard for cgi. The only thing you need is as many cores as possible(from technical perspective) No hardware will save you if you will not know how to optimize your rendering scene...Gpu are not used in rendering, just for preview. Maybe one day

EVGA SR-2 / 2x Intel Xeon X5675 4.4Ghz OC / 24GB EEC 1800Mhz OC/ AMD RX570 / Enermax Evoliution 1050W / Main RAID 0: 2x256GB 840EVO SSD / BackUp(1) Raid 5: 3x2TB WD HDD / BackUp(2) 8x2TB / Dell U2412M / Dell U2312HM

Yeah, well, you know how some gamers have to.build on a budget? Same thing with renderers. A is I have a AMD FX 6300 CPU, an nvidia geforce 750 tI 2gb gpu and 8 gb ram. I was wondering what on e aspect of my system would be the best thibg to upgrade to make blender work better in cycles rendering.

Actually blender uses gpu rendering at least in cycles mode. You need a cuda core processor AFAIK.

Basically LGA 2011-3 cpu + TitanX (only because blender can use that much Vram)

And 32GB Ram.

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Strix, Case: Corsair 900D, PSU: Corsair AX860i 860W, Keyboard: Logitech G19, Mouse: Corsair M95, Storage: Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD, WD 1.5TB Black

Display: BenQ XL2730Z 2560x1440 144Hz

Is gpu rendering supported on all materials? If yes, then it might be beneficial buying good gpu. As long as you will only use blender it might make sense, but if you will be bringing in custom renderers it might be incomparable.

I believe it's supported on blender's cycles mode materials.

Hey dude, my workstation has an xeon, 32gb ram, gtx titan x main parts anyway. I use a variety of 3d packages such as zbrush 3dsmax and many other programs. Used in game dev and cg. Before my xeon I used a i7 4790k I have seen a massive improvement with real time high poly modeling and the titan x is great for programs that utilize the gpu. But the best part is I can still play games with it. Rather than having an expensive quadro. But on a budget try save up for a intel based rig and sell your gtx 750 for a gtx 970. Also 16 gb will help out a lot with bigger projects. I understand saving money for parts is a pain. But you will see a huge improvement! :D I've never used blender.

Yeah, I know a super state of the art cpu, monstrous amounts of ram and a couple crosslinked high end video cards would make my renders faster. Thing is I'm on a budget. I was looking for a budget solution to modeling and rendering.

I suppose a nvidia geforce 960 would help as it has over a thousand cuda cores instead of the like 640 or so my 750 ti has.

At times I almost wish I was ignorant enough to play the lottery. I can't play lottery as I understand probability, of course, but I keep hearing about the 1.5 billion dollar jackpot and thinking what I'd do with it.

First off I'd take care of my family of course. New housing, new cars, top notch medical, etc. When it came to me, yeah, I'd build a monster rig. I mean, I could just see me shopping for the parts online, getting the top rated everything. Having it all delivered to my house by a convoy of UPS trucks, getting all the parts, multiple CPU mobo, multiple max power CPUs, multiple high end graphics cards, 64 GB high speed ddr4 ram, 32" panoramic 4k monitor, kilowatt  range power supply, etc.

As I assembled it all the background music would be Era's "the mass". Nice ominous Latin chanting music to accompany the creation of a monster.

Then I get it all together, sit down at my desk in my private computer/bedroom. I put my finger on the power button and calmly say the word "Contact."

As I press it you would hear some sounds like from a WW2 movie where the B-17's are all on the tarmac at dawn, the first engines start with a high pitched grinding squeal, followed by the deep roar as the engines fully engage and the blades on the propellers start spinning up. The music would switch to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"....you get the idea.

I would build myself a high end computer rig so big when you turned it on the cooling fans would affect local weather patterns.

Well, I'd like to render a model in a few minutes instead of a lot of minutes.

As for planning it out, yeah with everyone talking about the lottery I just couldn't help thinking about that. You know it would make a funny youtube video if done the way I described it. The computer guy hits it big, orders his parts, they arrive by the truckload, start assembling a 10,000$+ monster rig while playing "the mass", then assemble it. The guy sites at his desk. puts on a set of like old aviator goggles, preferably with mirrored lenses, maybe wraps a scarf around his neck, puts his hand on the case, then calmly says the one and only word spoken in the whole video: "Contact." and turns it on while we do the sound effects and start playing ride of the valkyries as the screen displays the hardware set up and so on.

end the vide with a local weather show flashing a news story about a mysterious and inexplicable sudden high pressure zone coming out of nowhere and diverting a hurricane that was heading towards the town. Cut to pics of the numerous high power fans on the monster rig spinning at full speed.
