Ethernet socket in wall

I have an ethernet port and my wall and I'm not sure if it's hooked up to the same network that my modem is so if anybody can help thanks. This would really help because the ethernet port or whatever it is on my wall is really far away from the modem and it has a really bad connection up here in this room. All suggestions are welcome.
