But those drives are pretty much equal, it's just a different form of it

Is a samsung 850 evo m.2 ssd or 850 evo sata 3 ssd faster as a boot drive.

This is for a laptop

M.2 is a faster standard.

M.2 is not a transfer protocol.  It's just a socket. And both the 850 Evo's you mentioned are SATA3 SSDs.  One uses the SATA connector, one uses the M.2 connector, both are using SATA lanes.

QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION!

When there is no danger of failure there is no pleasure in success.

Oh come on, do you guys read? That's a 850 Evo, does not matter which variant, all 850 Evos run at SATA 3 speeds. Unless you're stating another SSD other than the 850 Evo, I'm sorry apologize.

Yep that's the better word.

I could be wrong, but I do believe the M.2 variants of the 850s EVOs are a little more expensive than the 2.5" SATA III 850 EVOs, going for about $15 more for the same capacity.

You did. Nowhere did I say the M.2 variant is faster; I said PCIE BASED M.2 SSD.

Apology accepted. I'm somewhat sleep deprived currently and easily irritated as a result. I apologize if I came on harsh.

My plan was to put a m.2 ssd in the slot and clone the hdd it came with but now that i received my laptop (y700) i cant stand the speed of a hdd for anything so if im gonna put an ssd in theres as a boot drive i can either use the m.2 slot or the sata slot and i woll eventually populate both.

Not necessarily, the motherboard I use disables sata ports 4 and 5 when the M.2 slot is populated (gigabyte z97 gaming 3) I only wanted it so it wouldn't require more cabling as I'm a neat freak (when it comes to my PC)

Seeing as it's for a laptop (something the majority of people here seem to have missed completely), the main question is which one it has the connector for.  You can't install the m.2 if the laptop only has a SATA port and vice versa.

Seeing as you're mentioning a 5400RPM HDD, I'm fairly sure that SATA is your only option.

EDIT : Lenovo y700?   Yeah, forget about that m.2, it uses a 2.5" SATA
