Definitely the fx 6300 offers more price for performance. The a8, being an apu, wouldn't help much(actually wouldn't help at all) when combined with the 960. From what I've heard the apu may even get bottlenecked a bit with the 960. So definitely go for 6300. Also if you have enough money and haven't had bought the gtx 960 and go for a 970. It really makes a huge difference.

Actually the 4 gb version is a marketing trick. The gpu won't be able to push enough to reach the mark of 4gb vram.

Perhaps I was playing games that was more focused on cpu, like cities skylines

The only problems I've had with bottlenecking (since I have an i3 and a 290) is in ARMA, which eats up CPU load regardless of what you have. I haven't played Cities Skylines, but I know that would probably be another one. Those are the only two I can think of, everything else fully utilizes my GPU.
