Better CPU For Everyday Use

Go to solution Solved by suchamoneypit,

Look at both these builds that are the same price should i still go with the G3258? The most Multi tasking I do is like two browsers open with 2-3 somewhat graphic intensive sites.

those builds are pretty much identical other than the CPUs, personally I would still go with the Pentium.

I would go with the Pentium unless you do a bunch of multi-tasking.

Always wanted to make a super cheap and small media PC using that chip because its the perfect one for it.

Gaming - Ryzen 9800X3D | 64GB 6400mhz cl30 9070 XT

Homelab - many servers...constantly changing.

3970X/256GB - 5950X/128GB ECC - 5600G/96GB - 3400GE/16GB - 3400GE/16GB

The pentium has great oc potential and a dual core is enough for everyday tasks. It will give you plenty of power for day to day stuff and even gaming, especially if u oc

Everyday use generally favors better single threaded performance, however, if you do a lot of multitasking, more cores will help.

my multi-tasking is like 2 browsers open with a bunch of sites, that is the most multi-tasking I do. The 2 builds are both the same price ($325), do you think i should still stick with the Pentium?

ok.

1. It says that i have to upgrade the bios to use haswell refresh cpus, do i have to do that or does it already come upgraded?

2. will the motherboard support overclocking the Pentium? I've heard people say you have to get something like a non-z overclocking compatible motherboard.

I have never had to update the bios to support a CPU so I cant give you info there, sorry. I did have a friend who had the note on one of his AMD builds but it worked fine when he built it. As far as overclocking, I think you can use that board it just wont be as good and might not have as many options, and if you wanted to overclock I would invest in something like a 212 evo to ensure you are good on temps, although I haven't personally OC'd a G3258 so im not sure what you can get with what boards/coolers, buts its a fairly popular chip for overclocking and im sure guides are in abundance on the internet.
