I recently moved states here in Australia. My computer was packed well in a box for a month and then spent 7 days on a truck. The box did not have any dings and there was no clear damage to the case. I started the computer up and to my surprise it worked. I then updated windows 8 and restarted. I went to go the desktop by pressing windows plus d and the screen went blue with funny vertical lines. I restarted and the there were funny lines in post.

I took the computer apart, including ram and video card and put it back together. The computer started and worked till my next restart, where the problem returned. Its clear its a hardware fault other wise it would not happen in post. My computer is old and could do with an upgrade but I wanted it to last a few more years. Also I changed the dvi cable and no dice.

My computer is a

Core 2 Duo q9550

WIndows 8 Pro

xfx 6950

p5q premium asus mobo

Here are a few pics of the problem

The fact that taking it apart and reinstalling the card works for one boot is a bit weird and in my opinion that should for the most part rule out a hardware problem, but the total disconnection from power etc might temporarily fix it. Have you tried it in another PCI-E slot?

Did you try the intergrated input, it might correct itself meaning its a problem with your gpu.

First change the input, then the PCI-ex slot if that doesn't help it's probbably not the card. Try another card in.

If that doesn't help then it's not the card, try another version of drivers, next fresh install windows, then try to eliminate another hardware components (mobo/ram).

A new bios flash can fix this, sometimes your bios can just go bad, mine did with the GTX 480, a bios flash fixed it.

I had a very similiar issue with my first computer and GT6600, I've found out the GPU was....fried. Try it with another GPU, 99% the issue will be gone.

Hello everyone. First off thank you for taking the time to reply I appreciate all the help. So to answer a few questions I did leave the graphics card in when I transported my desktop. I also tried changing the dvi cable to no avail. I did though switch the card from the 16x slot to the 8x slot and I have not had a problem for the last two days but the day before I took the plastic shroud off cleaned it out the heatskink. I do suspect the move has broken the 16x lane, lucky there is no real performance difference.

That's ok the "8x" lane will work @ 16x as long as it's the only pci-x lane that's being used.

So the problem is back. I have found an old gts250 which I have put in to see if that corrects the problem. If it does not then i probably need a new computer. I wanted the computer to last another year, so if I have to replace the video card do I replace it with something semi powerful, like a 770 or 670 or should i just be cheap and get a 660ti which will give me a nice boost over my 6950 but probably would be redundant pretty soon. I will however try and flash the 6950 and see if that helps. Could a power supply cause a problem like this also ẁ yarns on i would be well and turkey out of warranty for my card ?
