I've always hated my R9 270x from the day I got it. Not sure why but it never performed to the standards I was expecting, yet at the time everyone made it out to be fantastic. I've been wanting a new graphics card for a long time, so much that I even bought a 7990 off ebay the other day while I was drunk (I managed to cancel the order). I'm not sure if I should wait for the new line up from AMD to come out before I buy a new one.

Should I upgrade my graphics card now and if so what should I go for? I don't particularly mind buying second-hand as sometimes the price/performance just makes sense.

Here's some details:

  • I run two 1080p monitors.
  • Do some graphic and web design.
  • Play a lot of games (Rise of the Tomb Raider is my next).
  • Sculpting in ZBrush.
  • I use Maya.
  • I also use Unreal 4 on occasion.

wait for the new ones it is going to be much better than the previous line up

That's what I was thinking. If I buy a 390 now surely it's a bad idea if these new ones are as impressive as they're looking to be so far. But... In the anticipation of the new cards could people be selling better cards cheaper?

R9 390. Tomb Raider features Tress FX 2.0 and that is something that runs better on AMD though it will run fine on Nvidia after several weeks.
VRAM - 8GB is good for content creation and 3D modelling

A 390 is looking to be the way to go. I'll have a look into it and maybe get one when they drop in price a little.

Sapphire and MSI are the best

Then you have XFX, PowerColor and Club3D which are solid

Then you have Asus and Gigabyte which should be avoided like the plague

Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated.

Take it from a certified Asus owner. Do not get them. Even if they are half the price, the headaches you will get are not worth it.
