A (probably stupid) question about hooking up gpu to psu

I'm putting a Radeon HD 6770 into my computer, and I don't have a 6 pin cable.  Can I use a cable that has an 8pin connector on the psu side and a 6+2 pin connector (not using the "+2" part) on the gpu side?

Yes. They are made as 6+2 so that you can do precisely that, rather than having to have separate 6 and 8 pin cables (:
