So I have decided to take the dive and add another folding machine back into my folding arsenal. Currently I have both my new desktop and old desktop folding almost 24/7 (specs in my signature), with the occasional CPU fold of my main laptop. Originally before I got my new desktop I folded with my laptop and old desktop. My laptop handled folding… Okay not super great... But it could fold, In fact I let it fold for one week straight while I was on a break. But when I got back from that break I realized my laptop was not acting correctly, and I started having graphical issues and it just did not want to fold anymore. I was folding with both my CPU and my GPU, it's a top-of-the-line gaming laptop from late 2010, it's designed to take a lot of heat and the way I have it set up it should cool itself sufficiently , but I think folding actually damaged the GPU a little bit, which wasn't a huge loss because I haven't gamed on it in years.

My laptop is still quite the impressive powerhouse though for how old it is, it has a Core i7 740QM (tried 920XM, it didn't like it, may go to an 840QM now that prices have dropped) , and 16 GB of DDR3 RAM. The only thing that has really held it back in the last two years or so has been the GPU, which is a GTX 460M. Plus when it was folding with that GPU, I could only do one WU every day and a half, although it was still usually worth 25K to 35K in points, The damage it was causing just wasn't worth it.

I have been toying around with getting an e-gpu for years now, but when I started looking, kits were really expensive at the time and they didn't have a super great success rate. Now that prices have come down on the kits, I figured it was time to go for a desktop class graphics card. So I have decided to buy another GTX 950, this time an EVGA ACX 2.0 FTW. I will be putting the card I just bought into my old desktop and putting the sketchy (but requires less power and might work with just the adapter alone and no extra power supply) PNY GTX 950 from it on my laptop.

I assume that if I can get this adapter that I just recently purchased to work, I will be able to turn my laptop back into a pretty decent gaming machine (from what I've read it may not even need an external monitor? I don't know if I believe that or not), and in theory a very acceptable folding machine. The adapter is supposed to allow the laptop to treat the desktop card as a regular graphics card so in theory F@H Client should be able to see it and use it.

I've never heard of anyone trying to fold on an external graphics card, but I am committed to give it a shot and will keep you guys updated on the progress. The adapter should be here by Tuesday, and my new 950 should be here probably by then also. So I will update you guys then ;)

CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 3960X | Motherboard: Intel DX79SR "Stormville" | RAM: 32GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series DDR3 PC3-12800 (4x 8GB) Quad-Channel | GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 970 FTW 4GB in SLI (I have Many other builds plus 100+ Macs (don't judge me)... Many specs are listed on my profile)
