Borked 360 w/ RROD - $9; Thoughts

One of my favorite gaming-related sellers called me earlier about a borked 360 he had around, asking me if I was interested.

What I know: it's a 2007 Falcon, it's got a RROD (don't know which flavor) and the disc drive won't open/close. To add to this, it doesn't come with a power brick or a storage drive.

The good: it's $9 and there's potential to be fixed, regardless of RROD (unless it's completely fried)

The bad: time to bust out my soldering station and an old PSU since we need to power up this baby to fix it.

 

The question: would it be worth buying it for a measly $9 with a potential extra expense of reballing and/or reflowing it for around $50 to squeeze out another year or so out of the ol' puppy?

If the person or shop is a reseller its only worth a third of his/her asking price. Chances are they have a power brick laying around and they CAN'T fix it.

Update: 

Bumped into a friend randomly on the bus home and he said he'll give me a power brick and a 20gig drive from his 360, since his is completely dead. That's sorted with no additional cost.

 

Now, onto the 360 itself. The guy said he inspected the console and it has no sign of it having ever been opened up, which is good. He also plugged it in and lo and behold video signal, which is good. Also, he detailed the RROD, and it turns out it's only a half RROD (AKA overheating) that pops up about 5-7 minutes after turning on the console. He doesn't really remember when he got it or where he got it from and I've done business with him quite frequently over the past 3-4 years.

 

On the phone with my dad as I'm writing this and he's telling me he can probably reball and/or reflow the board if it comes to that, for free of course (would be kinda messed up if he asked for money, lol).

 

Right now the only relatively troublesome part would be the disc drive but upon (very) close inspection, the motor that drives the tray works, so I'm going to assume the issue is a broken or missing belt which can be easily replaced.

 

As it stands right now, I am being offered an overheating 360 that could prove to be easily fixable. For $9 and a bit of elbow grease on my part, this could be a steal.

Will do. Also considering dumping the power brick alltogether and modding an old ATX PSU so I can have some wiggle room for some beefier cooling
