Weird CPU clock issues

Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

Sometimes...

Even if the CPU temps are fine, if the socket temp goes above a certain temp (can be different on other boards) it will throttle on some boards.

Adding a fan pointed at the socket (or on the back behind the board) and even a fan at the VRM's as they can induce throttling on some boards even before the CPU gets too hot.

How hot does the heatsink under the CPU get? (Dont just outright touch it, it could be hotter than you think)

If it seems way too hot for your liking, throw a fan pointed at it and retest your situation.

I've been looking at newegg user reviews and other sources and some say the vrm heatsinks can get quite warm with some configs.

I've been trying to overclock my CPU on my machine, but I've been having some clock issues. Mainly, after my CPU reaches about 52 degrees Celsius, the clock drops off to half its speed. I thought it was thermal throttling, but the CPU is supposed to throttle around 55 C - 62 C (this is from inference, AMD doesn't provide any specific specs, I had to search around forums and other websites), and the clock slows down at 51 C - 52 C, which is when the graph levels out in AIDA64 (pics below).  Lastly, AIDA64 doesn't seem to detect any throttling at all, which further confuses me. If I slow the clocks down by about 400 mhz, they stop doing this, but I feel I'm not getting the best out of my CPU which was designed to overclock (hence: Black Edition added to the name)

So, as a bit of background, I've got:

Motherboard: Asus M3A78-EM

Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 evo

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I checked the VRM's and the other areas, and they were getting extremely hot. Added some small fans, and now the CPU doesn't throttle. Thanks for the quick reply!

Glad we could help, enjoy matey.
