Upgrading Graphics card

vegurr

So im thinking of buying a amd 290 because i can get it for very cheap, and i want to know it if works with my current build in terms of power or anything else.

These are my current specs:

CPU: AMD FX-6100 Six Core @ 2921 MHz (3266 MHz TURBO)

GPU: AMD RADEON HD7870 (2048 MB)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3

Power: 500W Silver Power

RAM: 8GB (4 GB DDR3 KINGSTON 99U5471-020 x2)

I got 3 fans, might get another one, and 2hdd and 1ssd.

I did a bit inaccurate test on a psu calc. and it says i have enough(around 360W maxload) watts with my current 500W psu.

Will my system work with adding a 290?

Well, you'd have to replace the 7870.

Other than that, your computer should be just fine. Just remember to uninstall the HD7870 drivers and install drivers for you 290

Don't be fooled by the bottom line of my sig, that is just for my travels.

So you're telling me that Gaben is no God? Enough of your foolishness.

My hardware you ask? I'm using a Dell Inspiron 3217 Notebook... With an LG 25UM57.

I have not heard of silver power, but running a single gpu should still be ok.

If the rest of the system like the motherboards supported a 7870 then the 290 should be fine.

With such shady PSU ( no offence ) I wouldn't risk it. I'd get the GPU anyway and buy a new PSU.

One way is to go into the programs window in Control Panel and delete AMD Catalyst(I assume that's the driver's name. I could be wrong). When you install the new GPU, install the latest version AMD Catalyst (This one is right for sure) and have it recognize the new 290 and install updates for it. After that, you should be good to go.
