Yo guys,

I am quite confused on using pictures on my youtube videos. Now I have heard that you must cite your pictures, video, or music, if you didn't make the thingy but all the other youtubers use pics, and music without citing. Should I cite the pics that i use on my youtube?

I AM SO CONFUSED!

Nice hat

Everything should be cited when you're using something that doesn't belong to you.

"It pays to keep an open mind, but not so open your brain falls out." - Carl Sagan.

"I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you" - Edward I. Koch

But why don't the other Youtubers not do it

some are royality free, and youtubers, like linus get pictures from a royalty free platform. sometimes they get permission, as it is the content creator that has the option to put copyright strikes on them.

For example, Linus sometimes forget to cite music, but monstercat doesn't lose they're shit. So, just be careful and cite everything just in case.

So you won't get shitfaced by copyright strikes.

I thought I had some money... Oh wait... I spent it all ;(

It may not be required to cite things in videos, but as good practice, you should. TotalBiscuit is a YouTuber who does just that - uses footage from other YouTubers and then cites them at the end.

How do you get pictures from a loyalty free platform?

I think even LINUS does it

Linus uses Monstercat for most music. As well as music that isn't copyrighted anymore, like most classical works. If something is still under copyright, or uses licencing like Creative Commons, you must mention creator either in video or description. Many Youtube accounts say that they don't own any rights or that rights belong to this and that in description of video.

As for images, it works same way. LMG uses some site with free stock images. Those sites offer same as Monstercat with music.

What if there's this music i want to use. Can I just write the name of the person who made the song right after the video?

Depends on the artist. If you play some Taylor Swift or whatever then they'll probably put a copyright strike on it, but if it's a smaller artist they'll probably be fine with you saying who's music it is and putting a link to their youtube or bandcamp in the description. The best policy is to ask first though.

Like said above. Bigger artists and record companies tend to take videos down even if you have stated that you don't own rights to music. They see it as unauthorized distribution.
