Will a poor CPU bottleneck a storage server?

jcw150

Thinking about running a storage server with 4x 500GB drives on FreeNAS so will a bad CPU bottleneck it?

Thanks

P.S. I'm a massive FreeNAS/ server n00b

Programs run on Storage everything you do open runs on Storage/flash/ram ICT so no it won't.

However make sure you're not bottlenecking your SATA bus check clues on the internet of what speed and what supported bus on the box.

In the past I have seen various NAS with quite low performance numbers because of low speed CPUs. As a consequence of having one of these and seeing first hand the reduction in performance I personally went with a low end Ivy Bridge i5 and its more than enough for 4x 2TB drives in Raid 5 with software raid. Depends entirely on the CPU, you need enough for managing the software side (Samba etc) but not too much or you are just wasting it.

Personally I like to ensure my 1gbit/s ethernet is saturated, so I want that 100+ MB/s transfer to work reliably and it does on a custom built NAS. It didn't on a lot of the prebuilts using garbage ARM processors and such.
