On Board RAID Controller Quality

Go to solution Solved by Altecice,

The onboard RAID controller is perfectly fine for what you want to use it for.... I will say though that your signature in your post is breaking the rules for signatures (maximum 3 lines).

Hello LinusTechTips Forum

First of im not sure where this topic belongs, Storage solutions or under motherboards etc.

So i read this article on Puget Systems website about RAID controllers on motherboards being poor quality. The article was from 2007 and therefore not that relevant anymore, but it got me thinking about the quality of onboard RAID today.

The article can be found here: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Why-RAID-is-usually-a-Terrible-Idea-29/

The reason is that im planning on using the onboard RAID controller on my motherboard (ASUS Maximus Formula VII) with a mass storage in RAID 0, consisting of two 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM drives and a RAID 1 with my 2 500 GB Samsung SSD's wich is also my OS drive for a bit of redundancy. (Don't want to lose my OS in case of an SSD failure).

Now since this not a super heavy array, like 5,6 or 10 i figured i would probably still be able to do so.

So what are you thinking about this quality thing? Dose my plan sound comepletely hopeless?

Cheers!

Thanks for the quick responses :-) My PC is not powered on 24/7, but i don't have the money to replace my OS if i lose it completely also i only need the 4TB array for games and such. All critical files are backed on a cloud server.

Also i fixed the signature :-)
