Hey guys,

I'm currently planning on building a new desktop setup within the next 2 months. As this is my first computer build, I would just like to ask if any of these parts may possibly be incompatible due to the graphics card being too big, cpu cooler too large for RAM etc...

Here are the parts used:

GPU: Nvidia 970 (Gigabyte Windforce)

CPU: Intel i5 6600K

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170MX-Gaming 5

Hard Drive: Seagate 4TB HDD + Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2133 MHz

Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D

CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO

Power Supply: Corsair CX750M

If there are any recommendations for alternative parts or cons/issues regarding certain parts which I've chosen, please tell me about it :D

Thanks!

Use http://pcpartpicker.com/ to make lists. Swap out the 970 for a 390 (unless you need Nvidia features and such) as it's usually cheaper and usually performs better and has double the VRAM. Many people here will frown upon the CX PSU so get something from Tier 1 - 3 on this list: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/406160-psu-ranking-and-tiers/

Hey guys,

What budget what country?

and ya, the 390 is by and large a better card

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I've taken a look at the list and have decided on the Seasonic G650W

Im going to be purchasing the parts from Hong Kong. Budget wise, I'd like to keep it to under $1800.

About the 390, which aspects of it make it a far better card than the 970? Aside from the increase in memory that is, or is the memory increase alone a deciding factor? (as I have heard that AMD isnt the best for on going driver support etc... though I could be wrong)

AMD's latest drivers have pushes the 300 series cards far enough that they perform better than their respective NVIDIA counterparts in most games (390 > 970 >> 380x > 380 >> 960 > 950 > 370)

in addition current gen nvidia cards don't look to fully support DX12/Vulkan

It's just plain faster, more so at higher resolutions, if your budget is that high you should also get an adaptive sync display for gaming they're generally a lot less expensive than G-sync displays as well. Otherwise not sure on your hardware pricing or availability but that build looks fine

aside from that hard drive, get an HGST drive or something, a 4TB seagate drive is going to die and die fast.

also if haswell is a lot cheaper go for that if it gets you a larger SSD or something

As far as drivers go I'm not sure why they get such a bad rap, I've never had issues with them.

What about 4TB Western Digital Blue drives, afaik, they're quite reliable too. They're cheaper than the HGST ones (Ultrastar/Deskstar 7K4000) by quite a bit from a quick amazon search.

I'll definately keep an eye out for haswell chips but from what I can tell so far, they're not much cheaper than skylake.

If the HSGT drives aren't available then get like 2 2TB drives or something, a 4TB drive in general is going to have a higher failure rate.

Another question regarding my choice of cooler, Corsair lists the maximum CPU cooler height for the 350D to be 160mm but the Noctua NH-D14 is also 160mm tall. Will the cooler fit with a small gap between the top of the cooler and the side of the case itself or will there be a chance of incompatibility? (If anyone who has used this configuration could provide me with some insight it would be much appreciated) :D

That case seems highly overpriced, and a Noctua cooler generally isn't worth it

The N200 is a pretty alright case for half the price

if you want great airflow and productivity use get a HAF XB EVO for the same price of that case
