Hello folks,

first Happy new year

I'am planning to build a htpc in a closset drawer in my bedroom. the drawer is big enough to fit a full ATX mobo and a PSU and about a 15cm high cpu cooler. i want to buy some seccond hand components.

i already have a 450 watt trust PSU with a 24 pin and a 4 pin ATX connectors and a lot of molex(it is a older model)

i also have a 500gb sata hardrive so storrage is not a problem

i live in the netherlands and can get the folowing seccond hand parts:

q6600

4gb ram

asus p5q mobo

and some zalman cooler

all in a bundle for 70€ (ca. 76  usd)

the main use for this pc wil be whatching youtube video's and some movies in my bedroom instead of constantly (un)plugging my laptop.

first question will the q6600 be enough for a year or 2 for this purpose?

seccond, what kind of a gpu do i need for this? (i can buy something like a 5770 for 30€ or a 560 for 40€)?

third, the p5q has a 8 pin ATX connector will it work with a 4 pin since on the picture 4 pins had like a rubber top on them??

my total buget is around 100-150€

i hope you guys like my idea and can help me with some problems

greetings

snert98

You will need to cut holes in the back of the drawer for fans. The Q6600 is ok... But not the best, maybe go for an APU to allow some nice HD content and occasional gaming.

Main Gaming Rig:

Spoiler

Core i7-4770, Cryorig M9i Cooler, ASUS B85M GAMER, 8GB HyperX Fury Red 2x4GB 1866MHz, KFA2 GTX 970 Infin8 Black Edition "4GB", 1TB Seagate SSHD, 256GB Crucial m4 SSD, 60GB Corsair SSD for Kerbal and game servers, Thermaltake Core V21 Case, EVGA SuperNOVA 650W G2.

Secondary PC:

Spoiler

i5-2500k OCed, Raijintek Themis, Intel Z77GA-70K, 8GB HyperX Genesis in grey, GTX 750 Ti, Gamemax Falcon case.

The q6600 has integrated graphics, so no need for a gpu if watching movies and youtube is all you are doing.

As for the 8pin thing, it could possibly work, depends on if the cpu gets enough juice to keep running. Just gotta try and see.

Also I would be worrying about temperatures if you are going to put it in a drawer, the q6600 isn't a low TDP cpu

if i go for a APU i need to buy new i gues how is it possible to get a apu and mobo for around 125€, yes i was planning to cut some vents.

Maybe find a cheap NUC and toss it in the closet.

Or just a Chromecast for the display (provided it has HDMI) if you don't need it to store anything.

Should be fine as long as your wireless router isn't a turd.

chromecast isnt a option i need too acces my nas and dont think it works with chromecast aswel my router is standard isp thing that sucks.

but the nuc/brixx might be a good idea

It does, the motherboard may not have any video outputs however. In that case just get the cheapest gpu you can find like a hd 5450, almost all of them can run youtube and watch movies
