Hi guys.

I was just curious about how windows licencing works as I never really learnt it.

If I was to buy something like this and then build a new PC, install Windows 10 on it and use the code that came with that OEM package.

I assume I then wouldn't be able to build another PC and use the same code, and it's just a one time use licence?

What if on the original PC, my drive died or I upgraded the drive. Would I be able to reuse the code for that, or would I need to buy another licence for this?

I was just curious as I've heard conflicting things from friends and read conflicting things online, so wanted to make sure once and for all.

If someone could give me a rundown of how it works that could be great, as I'm looking at upgrading my system and want to know what I need to buy, and what it is that I'm actually buying.

Thanks in advance.

You can change anything in your computer except for the the Motherboard and still keep your licence.

So I could replace the main drive that windows is installed on, then just reinstall Windows as normal using the same key?

Can this be done a limited number of times?

Yeah, works like that. Win8 and up code OEM key to mobo BIOS. So code is automaticly invalid on new mobo. There's no limit on how many times key can be used on same mobo. They had that only with Win Vista (10 times).

Ah okay thanks!

I've seen you answer a lot of my posts.. Not stalking me are you?;)

What would happen if my motherboard were to break? Would I need to buy a new licence or could I contact Microsoft and tell them what was up and they activate it?

Not stalking :D I rarely check who is OP for topic and do I reply to threads by them.

As for breaking mobo... You can call and try to explain situation. Many people use that excuse to con MS for free activation. So depends on who is at the other end. Some bored worker who don't give a shit. Or some full of himself/herself new at work type of guy/gal.

I guess with almost 11,000 posts it's fairly easy for some of them to have been on my stupid questions  :D

Ah okay, so I guess the best option is to try not to break the motherboard  :D

Thanks though, that all makes a lot more sense now.

I'd been told by some people that OEM codes could only be used once, no matter what. Even if it was on the same hardware, so I was wary about buying one.
