I left my house with both monitors working fine and put my PC to sleep.

I come back and my main monitor wont turn on but my second one is fine.

I've tried turning it on and back off, unplugging a replugging and nothings working.

I try and extend the displays and it says this. https://gyazo.com/38878f6f8794e0c8faef2d978aaec516

Didnt work

What didn't work?

Is it still the same monitor that is dead, or is it the same display NUMBER that is wrong?

What I mean is... If you have two monitors side-by-side...\

Monitor 1 is on the left

Monitor 2 is on the right

Monitor 1 is dead

Swap Cables (Unplug cable from back of monitor 2 and put it in monitor 1, and monitor 1 cable in monitor 2)

Now is it:

Monitor 1 (Physical number, not Microsoft assignment) is dead

or

Monitor 2 is dead

This is to start diagnosing if it is the OS, monitor, cable, or output (GPU.)

Ok... Chill. We are trying to help. Screaming in all caps will just make some of us walk away.

You never said what kind of connections they were on before.

Does the main Asus monitor have HDMI input?

Sorry. Just stupid when it was working perfectly fine... None of your faults.... sorry.

Asus does have HDMI, gonna try swapping right now.

HDMI on Asus is working fine, it's plugged in now.

OK, so at least we know the monitor is still functioning. That's good.

Now, try using HDMI from your 980, instead of display port. See if it brings the Asus back up as your main monitor.

With DP unplugged from everything and HDMI in the Asus to the 980 it's working.

OK... Sounds like there may be a problem with the DP output on the 980 then.

I would just continue to use HDMI for now, but if you still have warranty on the GPU, you may want to do a claim on that.

Just to clarify, is it working as it is supposed to, with both monitors plugged in using HDMI cables?

Both monitors work fine with HDMI. Could the CMOS be the problem

I really don't think so, AFAIK the CMOS just routes the connection to the GPU's, not the particular outputs from them.

My money is on the 980... Sorry mate. I know it's frustrating as all hell, because I have been there. lol.

We all have stupid crap like this happen from time to time.

*Edit* Could be the DP cable though... Do you have another one you can use to test?

I dont... Why would I be the GFX card tho if the HDMI works?

Unless it's the cable, or the DP input on the monitor, that's the only other spot for failure.

I have seen GPUs lose outputs one at a time in the past, usually on their way to dying completely.

Seeing as how it was such a sudden failure, I can only guess it's the 980. Still have a warranty on it by chance?

My recommendation is reset CMOS through removing BIOS battery or however that works as that's fixed the many times I've had similar issues.

Could be a dead cable.

Which 980 do you have?
