CPU Advice for workstation

zobos

Hey everyone,

I'm about to build a workstation for Video Editing and 2D Animation.

I was looking at the Xeon E5-1650 v3 and the i7-5930k

but then I noticed that for about the same price I could have 2 i7-6700K.

Altho I couldn't find any motherboard with 2 LGA1151 socket... I was wondering if it might come out soon ?

dual socket mobo are only for heavy workstations

Skylake will never release dual socket mobos

Try Engineering samples. You can buy Xeon E5s for about one-fourth the original price on ebay. They are (almost mostly) tested and work fully. I have one Xeon E5 2658 V3 and runs great.

There wont be dual-socket mobos for skylake. Get the CPU that has the most cores you can get.

If you are just doing small to medium projects a i7 6700k will be enough but if you will be doing bigger projects I would wait for broadwell extreme edition cpus.

Well I can find plenty of LGA2011 and LGA2011-3 with 2 CPU socket so why wouldnt it come to LGA1151 ?

I didnt know about engineering samples but that seems to be a bit of a gamble :/

A single i7-6700k wouldn't be enough I really need those extra cores.

Also why would you wait for the broadwell extreme edition ?

Because Skylake is consumer oriented, Haswell-E is enthusiast, server, professional oriented. Not a lot of consumers that aren't any of the one's I just mentioned wouldn't buy any Dual socket motherboards to put their CPU's in, Intel know's this so they don't add the features. Adding those features adds extra cost and by the time they hit stores they would probably cost the same as Haswell-E. Please Correct me if I am wrong

Aye, also if you go 2011 v3 then you have options for 10 cores and 14 cores etc... there are a new run of chips coming out in about 6-8 months as well unless things get pushed back.

True dat. Plus Broadwell-E is launching in like 4 months max, not too long to wait.
