Lubuntu comes with AbiWord and Gnumeric pre-installed. They should handle Word and Excel files without problem. If you don't like them, try LibreOffice like has been said above.

i have decided to use lubuntu. However being new to lubuntu i need to know the following.  

- is there a built in program that can record voice from microphone

- best microsoft office alternative

Libre Office is the best MS office alternative. Ummm? Does Audacity support Linux? if it does then you'll be golden if not then RIP.

Audacity is supported on Linux, and Libre Office is excellent. I'm not sure how well it will run on low ram though.
