Best OS for a game server?

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Doesn't really matter then, go linux if all you are doing is servers and you have 5 hours to spare. Otherwise windows will be easier to install and troubleshoot.

So I would like to setup a game server for valve games like TF2 and GMOD. But IDK what OS would be best... Would Windows or linux be better? I'm new to this whole thing. The hardware I'm using is

AMD Phenom 840

Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2

16 gb ddr3

You are on a need to know basis, and you don't need to know.

OK. I will just use windows because that is what I'm used to. Thanks!

You get to try it for 3 months then you can backup and roll back to the beginning, Yea its legal.

Is there a benefit of a server os over a desktop os for a source server?

There is but it will only matter when lot of players use it.  like forexample on cs 1.6 you can let the client download trough the webserver. to bypass the goldsrc download limit.

If you're only hosting a couple of game servers you can probably just do it on a consumer version of Windows.

So if only like 4 people play it wont matter. OK. Clears things up.
