Hi and Merry Christmas to all!

So i have an asus G501 FHD version which as a HDD and m.2 SSD slot in it and installed a samsung evo 850 250GB m.2 ssd on it. After installing, i open This PC tab and found out that the ssd is not listed. However i downloaded the samsung migration software and it detects the SSD. My question is, what are the steps that i must do in order for me to transfer/clone my windows 10 OS from my 1TB HDD to my newly installed SSD. Which software should i use? (preferably free) . It the Samsung data migration software enough to to this task? I mean, would if fix everything for me like will my laptop automatically boot from the SSD and erase the windows 10 from the HDD? Will it also automatically copy the system recovery partitions etc? Sorry for asking so many questions, its just i'm scared that i might ruin my original windows 10 :( Thank you very much.

Used the Samsung Data Migration software a few times and yes it works. Did it on a few laptops and all you do after the transfer is plug it in to the laptop and boot, done. No extra steps, it just works. It will not alter the original HDD in any way and nor should it. If something does go wrong you just plug the original HDD back in to the laptop and take the SSD out.

For you since you are using an M.2 SSD in the laptop you will either need to go in to the bios and make sure it is set to boot to the SSD after the transfer or temporarily take the HDD out and reformat it with your desktop then put it back in, after you are sure the migration worked.

It is often best to do fresh installs but it is time consuming and if you only lightly use the laptop or don't require totally flawless operation to the manufacturer's speed claims you don't need to. Not saying there will be any issues but it's just not as 'perfect and clean' as a fresh install.
