Upgrade Mobo/CPU or GPU first?

TXshooter

Current build: MSI 760gma-p34(fx) Mobo with AMD FX 4130 @ 3.8ghz

GPU: MSI GT 740 2gb

Planned upgrades: ASUS SABERTOOTH z97 mark 1 and an Intel i5 4690k

GPU: MSI GTX 970 4gb OC

Which should I upgrade first? My GPU or my current Mobo/CPU setup?

Do both because just one upgrade will lead to a bottleneck. If you must, GPU first, but an R9 390 would be better. More games are going to be running up against the 3.5GB Vram stutter problem on the 970 as time passes, even at 1080p.

If you upgrade GPU, there will be a bottleneck.

If you do the CPU/Mobo, GT 740 is not gonna hold games pretty good.

But if you can tolerate the bottleneck of FX 4130, do the R9 390. (Not 970, R9 390 is lil bit faster than 970, 8GB VRAM could help you in the future).

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

depends on what you use your machine for. If its mainly gaming do the GPU first. As these guys have said the R9 390 is a good alternative to the 970 too.

I am only playing on 1080p, so I don't need a 390. I have read a good amount of forums that have said that the 970 will play most triple-a titles at high or maxed out settings on a 1080p moniter.

Most? Why not play all? The VRAM problem is getting worse as games become more demanding. Plus the R9 390 edges out the 970 in a majority of benchmarks anyway and is cheaper.
