980 SLI Issues

Go to solution Solved by Thx And Bye,

Certainly it is enabled. I wouldn't have had screen flashing issues otherwise...

If you disable SLI and connect the display(s) just to your second new card, does it perform identialy to your other old card?

Hey Guys,

so i got myself a second MSI 980 Gaming 4G for christmas. I installed it yesterday and tried out playing games with it today. The first thing I noticed was screen flashing of death. So I looked that up and found as a solution putting the game in borderless windowed mode, which works quite fine. But I have one major issue. Although my cards are correctly configured, I don't get any performance boost at all. Especially in borderless windowed mode, i can literally forget playing on Ultra settings. I have seen some gameplays of e.g. AC Unity on Ultra with 970s and 980s in SLI, which didn't look like anything I am experiencing right now. Certainly I have already updated and reinstalled my drivers quite a few times and I have played around with the SLI Bridge - nothing helped.

Since I spent quite a lot of money on my second graphics card, I really do want a performance boost and I'm kinda desperate right now. Please, help me!

Here are the remaining specs of my PC:

Gigabyte Z97X UD3H

HyperX Savage 2x 8GB

Intel Core i7 4790K @ stock speed

Thanks in advance for your help

PS: it would be quite nice if you could avoid commenting "sell them and get a Titan" or something like that

PPS: Is there any tool I can see the current performance of the cards on? Because one YouTube clip had it implemented in the vid

"I was once invited to a party over at a friend's house. At 3 am, I found myself in his room with some friends, overclocking his graphics card. This pretty much is me in a nutshell."

(I'm getting invited to a lot more parties since then, by the way)

You can try downloading Unigine Valey or 3D Mark off of their websitres and testing your performance for both SLI and non-SLI.

Are you sure, that SLI is enabled in the first place?

Under 3D-Settings -> SLI, Surround, PhysX in the bottom picture both of your cards have to be connected with a green thingy that has SLI on it:

If its not, make sure, that you selected "Maximise 3D-Performace" in the SLI-Configuration part in the top left corner.

And make sure, that you re enable it after every driver update.

Is it detecting both cards, in

Ex) Bios or MSI afterburner?

Yep it is. I just found out that MSI Kombustor doesn't stress my second card at all. I have no idea why

Thats nothing to worry about, kombustor isn't really for testing SLI setups anyway.

Only test with applications / games that have multi GPU support.

Alright, I disabled SLI, connected my display to the second GPU and everything seems to work like with the other card. In the meantime my Unigine Valley Download has finished. I'll quickly see what that does to my cards

UPDATE: I have no freaking idea why, but connecting the display to the second card and running the Valley Benchmark apparently solved my issue. Both cards were evenly stressed. I'm now going to test some games and see if they work as well.

Alright, seemingly it helped to connect my monitor to the second graphics card. What's funny, my PC crashed when I first did this and started a game but since restarting everything works perfectly fine.

Thanks a LOT for your help guys, especially @Thx And Bye
