Hey guys, im looking to buy a 980 ti, with intentions to water cool the gpu.
was wondering if anyone has had any problems trying to water cool non-reference cards.

Heard that you could remove the heat sink entirely which is problematic.
I bring this up cause it seems impossible to find a reference 980ti where i live.

EKWB makes water blocks for some aftermarket designs like the Gigabyte G1 and Asus Strix.

I am not to sure about that.

If you want to throw some money out of the window for your card there is EVGA (with great warranty in terms of cooler swapping and stuff...) or even the Kingpin cards.

i am pretty sure the will performa better than the Asus :/

Majority of LTT and HW Canuck vids shows the strix with higher fps and lower temp to other non reference cards. People that hate strix just hate Asus.

But the Strix cooler has a bad design compared to what contendors offer.

Kind of cruel what I read in this thread to be honest. Neither of you has real experience with custom watercooling GPUs, do you?

Yes the Asus STRIX 980Ti has a fullcover block available through EKWB, BUT Asus cards are very limited through their BIOS, and neither the STRIX nor the Matrix will allow you to modify the voltage in its BIOS. They have a hard lock and let you overvolt only very mildly, so in other words you can use custom watercooling for standard OCing like on air just with better temps. And then the customer service of Asus is literally non existent in most cases. It doesn´t mean the cards are terrible in general and if someone looks for a quiet card on air okay I get the point.

But honestly for custom water cooling a nVidia card you want to go with EVGA, not only does EKWB hold most of the design of those PCB as specific fullcover block, but also EVGA holds up warranty if you remove their heatsink put a fullcover block on. If you fry the chip all they want is the original heatsink back on the card, and they will replace the card without asking any question. Their 24/7 customer service is always kind and helpful. And their cards are being bought by top OCers. That means in other words many already perfectly modded BIOS are available for nice OCs matching a good custom loop. Even the Kingpin GTX980Ti has a fullcover block availabe, though I woud rather go with the regular Classified. They are one hell of a card and OC with water usually like crazy. This is a card worth being bought for custom water cooling.

For cards like AMP!extreme, Asus Matrix or MSI Lightning are no full cover blocks existent at this time and point. Simply because the demand is too low.

No, I don't but I don't need that to be able to tell the OP that there are better cards out there for what the Strix costs, in ANY regard (water or air).

Fair enough, there are better cards out there. Like I stated it isn´t the worst card made on air. It´s just you guys fight over stuff that doesn´t even help the OP. I´m not trying to be mean here in any regards but I wonder how quick people are with their statements although having no first hand experience.

I just finished a friend´s build with a custom loop and a single EVGA GTX980Ti ACX2.0 some weeks ago. For me it´s always a pleasure to work with that company´s parts because I know you´re always safe. Nice card, modded BIOS and even though the card has a reference PCB the OCing results were nice.

A Poseidon is a really good choice... NOT! It is a wannabe all jack of trades card. That´s never good. Go full cover in water or go home.

Nice card GZ! They are reliable and fast and OC decent on air. I guess you ain´t got no further intensions to custom watercool your GPU then.
