"Free" Windows 10?

So I went to the Windows 10 free upgrade site (yes, the legit one. not something like freewindowz10for1337scrillla.net) and it said a few things. It said I was eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10 and said that if I were trying to install windows into a new pc that I would have to buy it. However, I was allowed to put it on a flash drive and it said those same things but also said that if I were trying to reinstall Windows 10 from my flash drive, I would need a license key.

 

So basically my question is could i save myself the 80-90 USD and use my current license key when I go to install Windows on my new rig, since it seems as though it would register as a "reinstall." Any help/insight is greatly appreciated.

You can upgrade to W10 to any PC with 7/8/8.1 already installed.

As Czex said you can upgrade any 7/8/8.1 to 10 for free. I contacted microsoft and someone else on the forums confirmed that you can use windows 7/8/8.1 on the 1155 update for windows 10. That would mean updating it fully then using the key. I'm like 99% this should work, I will be testing it in 2 days. I need to wait for my parts to come on monday... Damn weekends ruining my fun

You have to upgrade once then the win 7 key will work for windows 10

It depends on your current key. Is it an OEM or retail key?

You can't install 10 on it from the get-go and then give it a 7 or 8 key and expect it to work, if that's what you mean. You have to install whatever version your key is good for, give it your key, THEN upgrade it to 10.

 

That whole "reservation" thing was basically a scam. You don't need a reservation, it's free, for everyone, still at this point, anyway. Whatever is on that flash drive is basically meaningless. Just start fresh, install 7 or 8 or whatever you had on the old machine, then go to the windows 10 upgrade website again, and request the upgrade in the new system. Or do you not have the windows 7 install?

Well I think It could work on the new 1155 build of windows 10. I don't understand why a Microsoft employee and a forum member would lie to me >_>. Of course I can't be 100%

I could be wrong... I just wouldn't attempt it, seems like a lot of bother for no reason to do it that way to me, since it's still an open upgrade anyway.

No it's allot better that way to be honest. Windows 7 does not have even Ethernet drivers for some motherboards (my soon to be old one) Not only that but why have to install windows 7 just to install windows 10 again. Oh and if you don't download the upgrade tool which some people won't, you have to wait fucking ages for 250 windows updates.

Key word, UPGRADE. You have to upgrade your OS before you can reinstall. Basically just upgrade your computer, login to your Microsoft account to tie the key to your login and then reinstall.

What you can do is clone the hard drive put it in a new PC enter the windows 7 or whatever key if it says it is already activated deactivate your old one upgrade to windows 10 on the new one then put windows 7 back on the other one and use the key again as windows 10 uses a different key. I think that works

So I went to the Windows 10 free upgrade site (yes, the legit one. not something like freewindowz10for1337scrillla.net) and it said a few things. It said I was eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10 and said that if I were trying to install windows into a new pc that I would have to buy it. However, I was allowed to put it on a flash drive and it said those same things but also said that if I were trying to reinstall Windows 10 from my flash drive, I would need a license key.

So basically my question is could i save myself the 80-90 USD and use my current license key when I go to install Windows on my new rig, since it seems as though it would register as a "reinstall." Any help/insight is greatly appreciated.

Install the free one off the flash drive and you can skip the product activation key bit and it just installs I did it last week
