Lines on gray screen

Hi guys

 

I tried plugging in my dell latitude e6420 into my monitor via vga cable. It works, however when I go on a gray screen I see a bunch of lines flickering. Is this a bad vga port on the laptop? I connected the vga cable to another computer with the same gray wallpaper I tested and no flicking lines.

If it doesn't happen elsewhere, it most likely is.

Heh strange enough, I tried it on a tv with the same resolution, no problems. So Im confused. If the other computer that I tried on that monitor had no gray lines. How come mine did?

well, this may sound real stupid...

 

but try your vga cable both ways, and in different positions.

its probably just a bad contact, that mostly shows up on grey shades.

 

that'd be my bet.

 

explanation on why: vga is strictly analog, where every color is a distinct amplitude in a signal. theres forms of interference that are more effective on some distinct signals. thats how wireless jammers work.

What do you mean by bad contact?

well.. every connector is a possible fault point, as is the first 2-3 inches after the connector, where the cable is bent very often. and for all we know the computer's gpu has a weak solder joint somewhere, which one screen picks up on, and the other doesnt.

if it was an old card i'd just deal with it, if it was brand new i'd probably contact the store with my findings and ask their input.
