Windows product key

I'm about to do a clean install of windows 10 on my pc, its asking me for a product key, but I don't have a windows 10 one because I did a free upgrade, can I use my windows 7 key?

Yes, you should be able to use it.

I wasn't able to use my W7 product key when I did a re-install, I had to go back to W7 and then upgrade again.

Interesting. Microsoft says it should work. I'd contact them if you run into any more issues.

When I did my fresh install (after upgrading from 8.1) it didn't even ask me for a key, since it is now bound to my motherboard

If you're using the original release media then you can just skip that section as it should activate automatically, but if you're using an install with the more recent updates you can use your windows 7 key to activate (however, since the media creation tool for windows 10 is only giving the initial release version and I'm not aware if that has changes as of late, it's unlikely that you'll have the latest version).
