Windows 10 update causes UI graphics problems

Go to solution Solved by XGwolf36,

I installed a previous graphics driver (in safe mode) and the graphical problems have disappeared (Thanks BlueChinchillaEatingDorito)

yay

I might try memtest 86 anyway......

Ever since the latest major windows update I have been having some annoying problems.

These problems only pertain to my laptop, but not my gaming desktop.

Dell XPS 13 9333

Core i7 4650U

Intel HD 5000

8GB RAM

256GB SSD

1st:

When I open the laptop from close, the lockscreen image won't go away right when I tell it to,

it will lag for a second and then go away in a janky way. The spacebar no longer does this (it used to),

so I can either click or swipe the touch screen upwards. This always takes multiple attempts.

I never had to deal with this before in Windows 8 or 8.1 or 10.

It's always laggs and is always so awkward since the major Win10 update.

2nd:

Sometimes graphical elements will fail:

Chrome's user interface will have solid black over it, and windows elements

(taskbar, notification panel, desktop selection) will dissapear.

They will exist for half a second but will then become transparent.

The chrome black bars problem always happens at the same time as

the windows UI problem. It does fix itself after messing about with

minimising chrome and opening other apps

This graphics problem usually happens after I wake the laptop from sleep

(open the laptop)

So I get the first problem and then the second.

Its really starting to rustle my jimmies.

Try to update your graphics drivers in Safe Mode. Or better yet, do a fresh install with a Windows 10 iso. Problems like this are rampant when you upgrade. Both my desktop and laptop were rendered unusable until I (by luck) got into Safe Mode to install the latest stable video drivers. Had similar problems. Lock screen glitches out, preventing me from logging in.

  • 2 weeks later...

With the graphics problem, I can fix it by disabling and then re-enabling the HD 5000 graphics.

I have to do this practically every time I open the laptop from sleep.

It is so annoying.

I have the latest graphics driver installed.

It won't let me rollback, but I might have an older driver stored somewhere.

I might try installing that.

I don't quite understand why I have to do it in safe mode - I don't understand what that will do......

I am not going to re-install Win10 - too much hassle.
