Folding for a week while gone

I was wondering if it is fine to leave my computer on, and folding while I am on vacation. I feel like this would be fine, but my room has poor air flow in it so my room gets hot and my GPUs already are hot just when gaming. While folding my GPUs hit 80 C regularly while my CPU sits comfortably at 55C is it fine to leave everything running while I'm gone for a week?

It was more for are the temps fine and is it fine to leave it on working that long so I wasn't sure if folding was fine or hardware was fine. So general it was. Sorry.

For the other people, I will probably down clock them. Whoever said that that's a good idea.

And read the similar question about 10 spots down - http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/506691-is-folding-while-out-of-town-away-from-my-pc-ok-to-do/

TL;DR (from the original post):

Heat is what destroys GPUs.  For folding, don't overclock your card, or if it has a factory overclock that runs hot, down clock it until it is running at a reasonable temp (75c or less should be fine).  You shouldn't have any shortened life expectancy in those ranges unless it had a problem to begin with.  And when it does crap out, a newer, better, cheaper card will be available to replace it.  This will also make it less likely that your PC has any problems while you are away.

I recently went on vacation and left my rig at a friends house to fold while I was gone (she has solar power, so didn't mind the extra power usage).  After about 5 weeks, I noticed it had stopped producing points , so I had them reboot the system and it was fine (never did figure out what caused the stoppage, <shrug>).

So just down clock your rig if it's too hot, and you should be fine...  If that still causes your room to get too warm, pull a case cover and set up a small fan as suggested above.

I don't really think you should leave your PC for a whole week folding unless you leave your window open or an AC unit on or something because eventually it will overheat.

  • 2 weeks later...

Make sure your room as good ventilation to make sure you pc doesn't overheat. Everything else should be okay if your pc, especially your psu, can handle being under load for a week.
