Hey guys, I've been playing an older game called Titan's Quest lately and in the options there is this thing called "triple buffering" which I understand the basics of (double vs triple buffering) and I generally understand what VSync does, but I'm wondering what the optimal settings are for me, and when I would need/want to use these settings.

As of right now, I have a 5820K and a GTX 980 playing at 1080p with a 144 Hz monitor. I've gotten the idea that VSync here is fine because the 980 easily gets over 144 Hz, so capping it at 144 using VSync is a "decent" option with little to no detriment to performance. I'm wondering now whether I should enable triple buffering as well, and I've Googled it but I can't find a definite answer about what configuration works best. If someone could explain the benefits/cons of VSync and triple buffering and when I would want/not want to use them, I would greatly appreciate it.

I think tripple buffering only improves stability, and since you have a 980, and are playing an old game, there is no use

Although V-sync is always worth it in my opinion if its a top-down RTS like game, especially with a 144Hz monitor

EDIT:

found this online

"Its not that complicated to understand. Usually you have double buffering. A back buffer and a front buffer. The front one is what you see on screen, and the back one is what the game engine draws the next frame to. At the right moment the back buffer is flipped on to the front one, and you see the new frame.

Triple buffering adds an extra buffer to allow an extra frame to be prepared in case the fps drops. It sounds good in theory but it usually causes more problems than it solves, and will hog extra vram."

So it might be worth using, since some old games often tend to be really badly optimized and can thus be more stable with tripple buffering

Vsync without triple buffering makes my WOT input lag absolutely nuts...a huge delay like a wireless mouse with 1% battery and a shit range...

Vsync with Triple buffering puts it in the middle... Input latency is reduced a LOT, almost feeling like Vsync is off in regards to mouse latency.

Thats what I felt anyway....

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
