well, two things:

- this should be under peripherals, really.

 

- the explanation why they're so expensive:

first, theres a small user base, so that means smaller production numbers, higher required margins, and so on.

adding onto that these are very complex pieces of kit.

they need to take in *any* hdmi input signal, repeat it on the output with ZERO latency, while also processing the signal (in most cases to h264) and send it over to the device its connected to as a video input / camera. this last one also with as little latency as possible.

on top of that, this all needs to happen with as little quality loss as possible, which when dealing with USB speeds may be a "slight" issue if you're not on 3.0 or 3.1

bringing us to the next bit: generally, usb3.0 stuff isnt cheap.
