notebooks, ultrabooks, laptops same crap

As stupid as this may sound i need to convince myself of something since i never came across this situation.Can you put a notbook hard drive in a laptop?As far as i know both have the same 2.5' standard and are backward compatible.

I am having an argue with a friend and i need to convince myself

Notebooks are basically smaller laptops. The terms are often used interchangeably.
