WD Green vs Blue

ryanmmax
Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

The Green isn't superseded by the Blue. They are differently optimized drives for different tasks.

Greens use less power and are quieter, meant as cheap mass storage but are good for general use especially when paired along with a ssd. Blues are not as quiet but are faster and meant for general use.

The difference in noise and performance are both noticeable. If you don't need particular fast loading speeds, already have a fast boot drive, and/or care about noise levels, go with the Green.

So I finished my my fan controller config and my WD Black is now obnoxiously loud.  I was about to grab a WD Green since they appear to me significantly quieter then the WD BLack, but according to new egg it has been superseded by WD Blue.  Looking closer I now see that there are 7200 RPM and 5400RPM WD Blue.

Is there any real world performance difference or volume difference between a WD Green and WD blue 5400 RPM drive?

Yes, I tried both and from the experience I have the WD Blue is faster and actually quite a lot considering they are nearly the same HDD..., I think the Blue also has more cache, but I am not sure about that

thanks, I have a SSD I just want some place to archive photos that is still more accessible then my network storage (which is not connected 99% of the time)

~snip~

Hey there ryanmmax,

Actually WD Green is going to be merged with the WD Blue on one line where drives up to 1TB will remain the regular WD Blue drives while the larger capacities will have 5,400 rpm and have the WD Green features. You can read a bit more on this here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=V5ooww :)

Regarding the noise levels, the general rule of thumb is that the better the performance the louder and hotter the drive will be. You can check all the specs including the speed and noise levels in the drive's spec sheets here:

Feel free to ask if you have other questions :)
