I have a wired Xbox 1 controller. Not the new Xbox one, the Xbox original. They actually use standard USB communication, so I replaced the stock cord (which was chewed up anyway) with the cable from a dead USB keyboard. I would like to get this to work on my PC. It works on my android tablet without any issues, just plug and play. Windows recognizes it but has no clue how to talk to it.

Pretty silly that an Xbox controller from Microsoft is not compatible with an OS from Microsoft. I got this to work before, so I know it is possible, but I haven't the slightest where I got the drivers from. Also I need the rumblers to work. Thanks!

Are you on windows 10?

Yes. I got it to work on windows 8.1 and windows 7 in the past, so I cant imagine that 10 would be an issue.

Go plug it into the XBOX one, update the controller than retry it on the PC.

Assuming that you have an XBOX one, because mine works pretty much flawlessly.

Not the new Xbox one, the Xbox original.

Right click, on the top click the update icon, "let me choose" option, then just click on the xbox receiver driver (anything should work, perhaps the plug in play one?). I had to do this for my wireless xbox adapter so I chose the "wireless adapter choice" and works flawlessly.

EDIT: Just saw your post this should work for 360, but I'm not sure how to make it work on the ORIGINAL controller. (perhaps try using the method above and see if it at least detects it as a 360 controller?)
