Hey guys I'm choosing between two laptops for my sister. She uses it for only internet browsing, emailing, content consumption and microsoft office. She tends to run many things at a time.

my two options are

http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-zenbook-ux305ca-ehm1-core-m3-6y30-36-115556-1241.htm

she used to have an i5 with 4gbs ram back in the ivy bridge days and it didn't serve her that well even though she only does the really basic stuff. I don't know why it was like that but it would take ages to open word or to run basically anything. This is why I'm a bit scared about the Core M3.

i5 is faster, but the flex series was poor quality laptops and zenbook is good quality.

the main reason why I'm leaning to the m3 is the ssd. but what good is an sad if the processor can't run anything.

it's not that slow, it's pretty good.

The problem with ther old computer was almost certainly that she didn't have an ssd. Solving that would probably make it perfectly usable for her.

I'm not convinced spending 1000$ on a laptop for office use is a good idea. There are plenty of good options that cost a lot less, without sacrificing performance - of course they aren't as thin, but frankly it makes very little difference.

The m3 is 83.33% as fast as my laptop's core i3-4000m with an OCZ Arc 100 SSD. My laptop is more than fast enough for many things, including audio editors, and it's sufficient for even light video editing. The m3 should have enough performance. My CPU doesn't hit 83.33% very often :P

still pretty darn expensive

666 usd for a nice ips display with 256 gb ssd and a very nice form factor? I don't think it's expensive at all.

cheaper options always have trade offs, display or battery life always suffers.

Well, I would have gone searching on e-bay to be honest... straight from ncix the ux305 is probably a pretty good choice.

It's not as simple as just doping the mathematical conversion. And it's not impossible to get something better for cheaper if you know where to look. I do agree that lower end laptop manufacturers should focus more on battery life and display rather than on unnecessary amounts of ram or dedicated low end gpus.
