I like your optimism now HALP!!

Currently, only M.2 to U.2 exists. There is no U.2 to M.2.

That's weird, why would it only work one way that's kinda dumb. and disappointing.. #firstworldproblems

not very dumb at all... do you find it weird that you can adapt pcie to usb, but not vice versa?

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

LINUS HALP! Im trying to install my M.2 drive on my Asus Maximus VIII Impact but it has a U.2 port, I know its possible HALP!

@LinusTech

Yep... As it stands you won't get to use m.2 drives. YAY for asus.

However, there's also nothing inherently wrong with the latest M.2 drives and the likes of Samsung's SM951 and 950 Pro also offer fantastic performance and NVMe support too, but as it stands you won't be able to use them here. This is certainly a drawback - U.2 devices will inevitably be expensive, as the Intel 750 is already retailing considerably higher than the SSD 950 Pro when it comes to £/GB.

You're totally boned.

The excuse ASUS gave....

When we spoke to Asus about the issue, it told us that heat from the M.2 SSD can also get dumped onto the motherboard's PCB, potentially causing issues there.

USB and Pcie run at different speeds while U.2 and M.2 have the same bandwidth. also YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!!!

Speed is not a major factor, it's the interface type. M.2 carries more than one interface in it, including sata 3. U.2 only carries its own interface.

Single link DVI-A can adapt to both vga and dvi-d, the opposite however is not true - simply because the dvi-a connector contains two completely different interfaces that do not coexist in vga and dvi-d.

Sure, but it would be trivial to bring an adapter to the market that converted u.2 to the specific pcie m.2 key (which is different than the SATA key).

Ive already looked that up and there are some pretty sketchy adapters out there i was just wondering if there was ma more mainstream fix

The thing is, I don't think u.2 carries a direct pcie lane. It does its own thing afaik, pcie 4x is just the bandwidth/lanes it uses

Where there's a will there's way i guess i just should get a sata adapter for now even though it wont be as fast. Besides I already copied my OS and everything else on it.

yea... I think that's the only option for now... Unfortunately, it will have to be reset as well. Because it can't run in NVME via sata if I remember correctly.

  • 2 months later...

I was also considering to buy M8I and was thinking of using M.2 drive. After a short search I found this solution, but I don't really know, if it work http://www.microsatacables.com/m-2-to-u-2-sff-8639-pcie-x4-gen-3-adapter

As far as I understand it, you should be able to connect it to the mobo via standard U.2 cable and the adapter itself looks at least, like it should fit into a ssd 2,5" cage. If it really works, the thermal problems of M.2 SSDs could be solved at least in this weird way as you could potentially install it into your HHD-SSD cage and most of them are at least ventilated somehow (indirectly by the case air flow or by own fan)

EDIT:in fact, I just found out, that there is also an 2,5" kit available http://www.microsatacables.com/u-2-sff-8639-to-m-2-pcie-i-f-with-2-5-inch-9-5mm-case

Now it need someone from the US/CA to order/test it, if it works at all. But at least I found them on e-bay as well and so far they have good reputation and no suspicious feedbacks (like product is a crap, works not at all, etc.) :D
