Go to solution Solved by vanished,

would there be any choice for my stock cooler? i have ti all cleaned up with no thermal pads considering they came off with a slight push. but yea the card works its all clean i just wanted to know if 45 for a arctic cooler designed for it would be worth it ? i do plan on overclocking a tad since ill have the head room

Well, if the heatsink itself and the fans are OK, and it is able to be installed in a way that makes proper contact with all of the important parts it should be fine, but if any of it doesn't sit like it used to, you should probably go for a new cooler. That price seems reasonable since if you look at the reference model of most cards vs a higher end on the difference can easily be $50 or more, and more or less it's just a better cooler

i had a really bad overheat today that my system allowed for some dumb reason , my fan somehow locked at 30% adn my core hit 103c in h1z1 ....it worried me along with recent issues of it just feeling hotter than it should , i had a 6990 before it never hit 80 unless benchmarked.

i opened it up to see the thermal pads melted to and stuck to different chips... the thermal grease was also rock hard and couldnt be removed with rubbing alcohol ( i had artic cooling cleaning compound 2 step)

i can but a new cooler for 50 usd ( artic cooling aftermarket ) would it be worth the try to bring my old card back .

any advice can help

I would probably look for a newer generation used card. I don't think its worth putting $50 into a card that old.

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Strix, Case: Corsair 900D, PSU: Corsair AX860i 860W, Keyboard: Logitech G19, Mouse: Corsair M95, Storage: Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD, WD 1.5TB Black

Display: BenQ XL2730Z 2560x1440 144Hz

yeah didn't Linus approximate one of the 6990 cores with a 270 in the recent scrapyard wars?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

If it works yes, but if it doesn't you might just be out another $50 on top of the card, so I would be inclined to just upgrade, but it's up to you and your risk tolerance :)

Oh I thought after the melting you hadn't tried it since and weren't sure about it.  In that case it probably would be worth cleaning it up and continuing to use it, especially if it lives for at least another year or more.
