So I set up this build to be a FreeNas server: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9G6Jcf (any suggestion here would be welcome as well)

and I want the server to service this htpc over ethernet: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rDvXD3

Is it possible to stream video from your FreeNas server to the htpc without any issues?

I have 1000 mb ethernet network so i dont think speed should be an issue.

You need to ditch that RAM and get ECC RAM.

Not only is ECC RAM a must for FreeNAS in general, that motherboard will ONLY boot with ECC RAM.

Otherwise, build looks good. You're going to fall in love with IPMI.

Why dont you use Plex to stream over the network. It has built in ability to broadcast over your network and you can access it remotely if you so wished.

Seconded, Plex is an absolutely amazing piece of software. I use it at home on my server (although I run windows server 2012r2) and have loved it. In my opinion it is one of, if not the best freemium style pieces of software in existence and I recommend it to everyone I can.

I will also add that if your only use is going to be playing video on that HTPC, I would ditch it, save yourself a bunch of money, and get a chromecast instead they make an ethernet adapter for it if your wifi isn't that great. If you are going to be using it for other things like steam in-home streaming or playing emulators or something stick to the HTPC.

Lol ecc ram is a total waste of money on a bad system, likewise using anything other than a relatively cheapo motherboard is a huge waste.

I'm not going to waste time typing out anything other than this:

You have absolutely no clue what the hell you are talking about.
