Do I need VRM heatsinks when overclocking?

I'm planning on watercooling my FX 6300 with the nzxt kraken x61, and I was wondering if the VRM on my motherboard (Asus M5a97 le R2.0) needs a heatsink? I've heard you shouldn't overclock on a motherboard without heatsinks on the VRM or it will probably overheat and die.

Depends on the overclock. For yours, yeah, you should probably get some VRM cooling. I think you can get aftermarket heatsinks for the mosfets and chokes but I'm not sure.

You really don't want to overclock on a small, sub-par VRM, though. How many phases does it have?

Looking at the motherboard, it looks like a reasonably good power stage, just doesn't have any cooling. Probably should have some if you're overclocking - they get toasty.

I have my FX-4350 Overclocked at 4.5 GHz at 1.4 Volts.I using the beefier version of your MOBO,the M5A97 R2.0.It has heatsinks for both VRM and NB/SB.Also feutures a chip for auto overclocking.I suggest you either get some stand-alone heatsinks or get the mobo I mentioned.
