390 would be the best bang for buck solution while the 980 and 390X would be complete overkill.

I would go with the 390 over the 970 and for the 390x and 980 that all comes down to if you have the money

I have my doubts on the 390 because I read that it has some issues regarding power consumption and overclocking is bad compared to the GTX 970. Is this true?

the GTX 980 is the better GPU amongst those, but price to performance it's probably best to go with an R9 390 or GTX 970.

I have my doubts on the 390 because I read that it has some issues regarding power consumption and overclocking is bad compared to the GTX 970. Is this true?

it does not have ''issues'' but it does consume noticeably more power and it's also true that it won't overclock as well as the GTX 970. That said, out of the box 390 perform better and it has more memory.

Thanks for clarifying this to me.

that said, if you pick a 390 with a good cooler on it this will be a non issue the card still run at acceptable temps and noise level if you go with the MSI twinfrozr card for example or the sapphire nitro...

Nvidia have a lot of goodies to offer with the cards though, among the most notable ones would be shadowplay, gamestream and full support for gameworks features in games...if you don't care about that stuff then the 390 is a good choice.

Driver support is also superior on nvidia with good day one game ready drivers for every major title that hit the market. AMD is also doing well in that regard but sometimes it takes longer to get things fixed.
