I need to clean install windows 10 on a really old cluttered windows 7 machine... How can I do this? I have 2 other partitions on the same drive that I want to keep... Only wipe the C drive and clean install windows 10 on it... How would I go about doing this safely? There are 100s of GBs on those partitions so it will take ages to backup... Please help.

Thanks

Upgrade first and then look for option called 'reset this PC' in Win 10. That'll do a clean install. I'd suggest you first get a feel of the 10 and make sure everything works and you got legit drivers and so on. You can revert back to seven for 30 days but not if you do a clean install.

I want to keep 10 on it... Drivers and stuff can be installed later... I want it to be like I've just put a CD in, and installed it... Except with the other partitions still there...

I don't really understand what you're asking here @Gereshy13

Are you already on Windows 10 and just wanting to reinstalled Windows 10?

When you install an OS you get additional options to delete or keep partitions, and what partition you want to install the OS on.

It might help to tell us how many drives and partitions you have and where you want Windows 10 to reside...

That's just not gonna happen. You can either keep the license you have and upgrade or buy a license and format+install. But not both. After upgrading you can however 'clean up' the install by using the 'reset this PC' method.

I think his main concern though is his partitions.

To get the free license you first must upgrade. Doing so won't affect anything on your PC except to upgrade to windows 10. Once you've upgraded you can then do a clean install during which you select which partition to install Windows 10 on. You have to upgrade first in order to get windows 10 for free.

Well, if you dont alter the partitions, then they wont be affected.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Your partitions are not touched unless you tell the Windows installer to do something with them. It will only install Windows on the partition you select. Remember though you have to UPGRADE to Windows 10 first. This does nothing but upgrade your current Windows install. After that you can do a clean install. AGAIN it will not erase your partitions unless YOU select them. Only select the one you want to install to and you will be fine.

In order to do a clean install you have to make a windows install disc or usb. The windows upgrade tool can do that for you. Just select which version and bit and whether you want a disc or usb. Then burn the img or create a bootable usb drive and then restart your computer and boot into that and it will take you through a clean install.

It looks like it's not needed. It registers your hardware. Skip that step in the install and windows should activate once it's able to connect with the servers.

So I can't switch hardware out? That's stupid isn't it.

From what I've read if it doesn't activate after that, you're suppose to be able to call in and they'll activate it for you if you explain what happen. I'm not sure how reliable that is though.

I formatted my SSD on a different machine and installed Windows 10 onto it, I disliked how it ran a lot of my applications I used on a daily basis, Also upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1 broke some of my applications, so they needed to be reinstalled even though they were on a different hard drive.

I'd suggest to stay on 7 or upgrade to 8.1 as I've now downgraded to Windows 8.1 again.
