HDD started smoking

Hi, I'm not totally sure if it's my fault or just a bad drive. I was changing my PSU and my motherboard. Had everything put together and plugged the power and after second of being on the HDD just starts smoking and my computer shut itself off. It will turn back on by it's self, but the same thing. Smoking and shutting off.

I just powered it back on and it's staying on without smoking. I kept it on for a couple seconds though.

I can't tell. Nothing is showing on my display at all

Unplug the drive with the system off and start the system back up.

The harddrive (the controller chip specifically) is probably dead then...

Positive, coming from under the HDD

Nothing at all, even if it's connected to my mobo

Yeah, I was just doing some upgrades.

I think my disk drive stopped working also. Everything lights up, mobo, gpu. Fans work. My mouse isn't lighting up and my keyboard goes back and forth

Is my PSU safe to rule out? I have a sabertooth z97 mark 1 mobo. The HDD was a WD Black 1 TB

Where was the HDD in relation to the rest of your components?

You should really remove your harddrive from your system, see if anything shows on the display, try with old and new PSU.

 

If nothing shows, your new PSU might've burned some other components too...
