Hi, I'm looking for some criticism on this build.

First of all, the budget: maximum €900. I'm located in Belgium and used the partpicker with the prizes in France, they are sometimes higher than in my country, sometimes I can get them a bit cheaper. It doesn't really matter for a couple of euros.

This build is not aimed for gaming, rather for general use for work + photo editing and some video. I assume a quad core cpu is excellent for the job, and oc isn't needed for the time being.

Maybe later on, I could add a graphics card, now it will do with the onboard graphics from Haswell.

Upgrading since the old one is very old, I think 7+ years, I don't even remember when it was bougth, there is a pentium inside.

I don't need any suggestions for peripherals, the os of choice would be windows8 or 7 pro, but doens't need to be included in the list.

I think some of the parts I've chosen are very good, but maybe I don't need them to be as good, like the mobo or the ram, but since the are rated very highly, I thought why not.

Here are the parts:

CPU:  Intel Core i5-4670 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  (€204.90 @ Amazon France)
Motherboard:  Asus Z87-PRO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (€186.99 @ Amazon France)
Memory:  Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  (€59.99 @ Amazon France)
Storage:  Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  (€119.88 @ Amazon France)
Storage:  Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (€60.65 @ Amazon France)
Case:  Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case  (€93.89 @ Amazon France)
Power Supply:  SeaSonic 520W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply  (€79.99 @ Amazon France)
Optical Drive:  LG GH24NS95 DVD/CD Writer  (€29.69 @ Amazon France)
Total: €835.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

What kind of programs are you using? How heavy is the photo/video editing?

Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop occasionally are the ones I use. Since the previous pc wasn't as powerful as I wanted it to be, any program for video editing would be too heavy so I didn't do much of that. However I would like the ability to do just that.

Definitely go with AMD, or an i7, In my personal experience i5 really sucks in Photoshop if you're going to edit something taken from a DSLR.

newegg.com is cheaper.

If you don't want to OC that means you don't need a good fan etc and stock should be fine even for silence with an R4 so maybe you could get an i7 4770? You'd have more threads etc. Another good one to go for is the xeon 1230+ v3 series, theirs many models to choose from just make sure it's v3 and 1230+

Your SSD is awfully expensive, you could throw in another 30 euros and get a 250gb for that price probably.. Your HDD is pretty expensive too. Your motherboards too high end for what you want, a fairly cheap $100'ish motherboard would do you fine. Your optical drive is the price a blue-ray would be. Get a card reader possibly?

Get a 550w psu just incase you want to add in extra drives, an insane gfx card etc. Atm the amd radeon 7970 is $300 = 220 euros or so and it's a great valued gfx card so you should probably get that, including the graphics card and probably windows 8 this whole build will cost less than 900 euros if you buy with newegg.com

An i5 works fine for photohop... You probably just didn't have hardware acceleration on.

newegg.com is cheaper.

Newegg doesn't ship internationally.

Are you going to be heavy on After Effects? I ask only because AE is the only program out of the Adobe quite that utilizes cuda and can't take advantage of OpenCL.

Now I've chosen an i7, but it isn't exactly cheap. And like @ShadowRaven proposed, I've gone now with a cheaper Kingston SSD. I do not really need the 256 gigs, besides for the os and a few programs.

Are you going to be heavy on After Effects? I ask only because AE is the only program out of the Adobe quite that utilizes cuda and can't take advantage of OpenCL.

Not much of After effects.

I also don't need a wireless network adapter and I can use the optical drive from the pc I'm replacing.

What is really the advantage from a particular unit of RAM over the other? Since I'm not planning to game in the future I do not really need the 1600MHz.

Thank you all already for the big help!

I tried to get less than $900, but again the FX-8350 or 8320 are excellent options for editing, the extra cores really make difference against an i5.

And why the GTX 660 Ti and not 760 or 7950? Because of the CUDA cores, this one has 1344 and the 760 has only 1152, and I don't know too much about OpenCL support on Photoshop, but surely they don't work with AE.

8 cores for such a low price is tempting. I have to say that I don't really know much about the mobos amd requires (AM3+ and such)

Shouldn't a 660 be enough for editing? Or even a 650 Ti?

Wooaah, that psu is a bit over the top. And the same as to @Masfiras, is that gc needed for the job you think?

I know you guys love those - can I say - high-end graphics cards.

If I choose not to ship the items from France or Germany and I pick them up in my own country, the estimated price would be €815, without the GC. That's a lot. I've searched for the tarifs for shipping these things when you live outside the Amazon countries. You even have to pay for each part and depending on the weight of the components you have to pay more or less.

EDIT: I've found out that shipping is freeeeeeeeeee!

The psu is for crossfire and I had 7970's in mind for some reason. This what I meant to put in: http://fr.pcpartpicker.com/part/fractal-design-power-supply-fdpsuin2b750w

Of course you need a gc, or you want to get stuck forever on Photoshop when you try to edit one pixel of a picture taken from a DSLR ?

And you have the money to get one of those, and for this kind of application performance is relevant, even if you start working on AE, a high number of CUDA cores is essential.

The graphics card is probably overkill for photoshop--a 7770/7850 would easily do but it will help in video editing/rendering.

Everything in the Adobe suite but After Effects already supports OpenCL.

He said that he will not be using much of AE at all.
