So, I am a student, and pieced together about €215 of savings after about 5 months, and I want to upgrade my PC for gaming.

I have been looking at a few upgrade paths and I can do this:

Path 1 (Skylake, DDR4):

Intel Core i3-6100, Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2H and 8GB Crucial DDR4 RAM. I can save off a couple of euros on the RAM but not much.

This path will cost me €230, which is slightly over budget

Path 2 (Haswell, DDR3):

Intel Core i3-4170, MSI H81M-P33 and 8GB Crucial DDR3 RAM.

This'll cost me €186, so I will have €29 left over for something else

Path 3 (Vishera, DDR3):

AMD FX-8320, Gigabyte-GA-78LMT-USB3 and Crucial 8GB DDR3 RAM.

This, is once again over budget at €239, unless I go for the FX-6300.

Path 4 (Kaveri, DDR3):

AMD Athlon X4 860K, ASRock FM2A88M Extreme4+ and Crucial 8GB DDR3 RAM

Cheapest route, at €156. I might be able to sneak in an SSD as well (or some steam games) :D

Path 5 (???):

Your choice, in that case put it in the comments.

The reason I put this up here, since I have a difficulty finding out what is the best option. 3 out of 4 CPUs aren't on Anandtech's CPU bench which is what I usually look at.

My current specs are:

Intel Core2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz

some OEM LGA775 mobo

4GB DDR2-800 RAM

750GB HDD

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB

Corsair Carbide SPEC-03

Cooler Master V450

Thanks for your help!

Laptop: Intel Core i5-4200H, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, GeForce 840M

Desktop: Intel Core i3-6100, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, GeForce GTX 750 Ti

I would suggest an i5-4460, H81 motherboard, and a cheap 8GB kit of DDR3.

i5-4690k@4.5GHz || MSI GTX 970 || MSI z97 Gaming 5 || NZXT Kraken x61 || WD Black 1TB || Crucial MX100 || 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro || Corsair RM750 || NZXT H440 || Corsair k70 RGB mx browns || Acer H236HL || ViewSonic VX2255wm-4

Not really possible. The absolute cheapest I can do that is about €250. I prefer not to get second hand parts either, because you never really know if they work correctly (look at the latest Scrapyard Wars episode).

Then get skylake.  It has the best upgrade path since it's the newest platform.
