I have a £100 budget for a new pair of decent headphones, I'm not sure what I'm looking for as I like bass and balanced mids but love crisp highs so is there a pair of headphones which fits my needs?

I've been suggested the Audio Technica ath-m50x's so far, are there any better out there?

Thanks in advance

I dont know about headphones also, but with that budget Ill just grab any headphones that you can get with that amount as long as it has a 2.1 surround or higher and a microphone.

The m50x is not a good value. They sound fine, but they are too expensive for what they are, which is basically a glorified HD668B, for double the price. The two sound, similar, at least to me and my tinnitus.

If you prefer highs, then stay away from sennheiser, they're famous for their darker tones and muddled highs.

The AKG K 240 mkII I have manage all around solid highs, and are about 100p give or take with conversion. I haven't pulled them out since i've gotten my k7xx, but so long as im not insane they have a 6.35mm audio jack, meaning you'll need a 6.35mm-3.5mm converter (boooo) or a digital to analog converter (DAC - Hurray)

? maybe try to make sense

Your link takes us to a pair Philips cans. Not an M50X.

And the m50x is too expensive for the sound it reproduces, the m40x sounds exactly the same and costs far less.

Nicer? can you elaborate? any other suggestions?

If you want a pair of open backs, the Sennheiser HD 518 are really good for the money and are often on sale. If you want to up a small step up the HD558 or HD 598 are slightly nicer for a little more money.

If you want to stay with a closed back, the Beyer Dynamic Custom One Pros and DT770 are comparable to the ATH-M50x for a similar price

Which would you say is better out of the two closed back ones you suggested ?

The DT 770 are "studio monitors" so they have a more accurate and flatter sound curve but are harder to drive depending on which model you get as you can get it in two flavours; 80 ohms and 250 ohms. So if you have an amp, the listening experience would be even better.

The Custom One Pros are geared more as "mainstream" and daily use so they have a bit more bass but can be easily driven by even you phone at 16 ohms. And there is an option to buy a mic that plugs into the headphones

In short, the Dt770 are a little more premium feeling as they are geared towards "professionals"

Don't want to be annoying but I am not very audio literate so I'm unsure, would my phone/PC alone be able to power the DT 770's? And would you say they're better than the ath-m50x in terms of price to quality?

Your phone would probably struggle to power the dt770s and it would depend on your PC, if your motherboard has good audio components then it could drive the 80 ohms decently.

In terms of ATH-M50x vs dt770, it would be more of a personal preference on the design and sound signature. But you would not be disappointed with either.

What was it like listening to the DT770 on your setup?
