I'm using a 3570K, had it for a about 6 months and I just can't get it to keep cool. Had a few different coolers and it doesn't seem to make much difference. I'm at 4.5Ghz, 1.26v, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, AS-5, in Prime temps hit 90C easily.

Is it worth delidding? I don't really care about it running hot, if it dies I'll just replace it, but the temperature barrier is stopping me overclocking further. I don't think I have any non conductive TIM, so it would be AS-5 I'd be using between the die and IHS, cant seem to find any instances of people messing it up, even a video where some idiot uses a pen knife and hammer.

Anything else I could try to bring temps down, or should I just get some razors and go for it?

Thanks.

If your not worried about it breaking and you have the money to replace it, then go for it.

Make sure you use none conductive TIM, otherwise you would be wasting your time.

What are the downsides? I get that I wouldn't have a warranty.

you might broke your chip

There is a chance that you will break the processor while delidding, and if a heatsink applies too much pressure, the die will crack.

i dont think your temps will improve that much and you will also have to use mx4 or other good stuff on core die to actually see a difference i have delidded my 3570k and i have no temp improvement at all...

(ps i also lapped cpu/cooler itself too)

Sounds like you are the perfect case for delidding, if you are at 90c on 1.26v then you will be able to get a huge heat decrease in delidding. Just make sure you are prepared as you want to be as careful as possible and take as much time as possible so clear a few hours one day to do it and take breaks during it if you are using the razor method.

Out of curiosity, what do you see for temps at stock speeds and voltages?  Maybe you just got bad luck in the CPU quality department.

It is worth it. Do it if you are ballsy and have the money to replace the chip.

Just tried it, about 65 on the highest core 55 on the lowest, turboing upto 3.6Ghz.

That is one of the signs of poorly applied thermal paste, in a perfect world you want all the cores to be the same temp but when your cores have more than a 6-7 degree difference between the hottest-coolest then you should think about delidding.

Yeah, wow.

Exactly what he said.
