Hello ladies and gents,
Ever had a noisy pump ? :))

So there's this deepcool maelstrom 120k on a Gigabyte Z97M-DS3H motherboard. Thing is, this mobo only has 2 fan connectors, one labeledz CPU_FAN the other SYS_FAN. So i do what common sense dictates, connect the pump to the CPU_FAN and the 120mm to the SYS_FAN.

But then there's a somewhat rumbling high pitch noise (if there is such a thing) thats really irritating coming from the pump. So i check the bios for some speed control. And it's supported, but has absolutely no effect on the pump. The fan obeys perfectly.

So i check the pins. I see the motherboard has only 4pin connectors, the fan 4pin but the pump is 3pin. And in the motherboard manual i see the CPU_FAN pinout, and obviously the one missing a connection is the Speed control pin.

Now, the only thing that makes this pump quiet is switching it to the SYS_FAN connector (and moving the fan to the CPU_FAN connector as a consequence).

The pump registers absurd rpms while on CPU_FAN - 6200 rpm. Official pump specs give it a max 2200 give or take 10% rpm. when moved to the SYS_FAN it reports 3500 topping 4000 in full load. Now i have a quiet pump, however every now and then i saw my cpu jump to 100 degreesc celsius and really freaked out. the pump registered 0 rpm for no apparent reason. i had to reboot and it resumed spinning. this is alarming and i need to fix it.

Deepcool support told me the actual rpm is half the reported value. ok so technically a 6200 would be 3100. still beyond it's specs thus the noise.

When moved to the SYS_FAN it gives 3500 thus 1750 rpm which is ok so the pump is silent. which would be ok if it would keep spinning at all times.

I've checked all the new motherboards, they all seem to have 4pin connectors, and i've checked some watercooling pumps and they all seem to have 3pin connectors. What's going on here ?

I'm really smh can't figure this one out.

Thanks for reading.

The Deepcool AIO aren't really super quiet or the best compared to similar 120mm AIO's on the market so the noise depending on how it is might not be something that can't be fixed. As for the pins on the cooler most require you to run the pump at full speed, some that do allow speed control on 3 pin require you to setup the motherboard's header as DC voltage control.

that is an asetek design pump and the pump rating of 2200rpm is standard. reporting

6200rpm sounds like a UEFI issue. do you have a molex to 3-pin fan adapter?

as sometimes the fan header does not deliver appropriate amounts of voltage and

could cause false input data.

doubtful the mobo in question has a DC mode for the CPU_Fan header (as verified

in the mobo manual). only verification would be that the pump rpm decreases with

selecting a slower voltage/cycle.

asus mobos have a PWM or DC mode to work with pumps, 3-pin or 4-pin fans.
